Event overview + Our role
The 2023 Total Solar Eclipse was a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical moment – visible in only a few select places across the globe. The best seat? Western Australia’s north-west coast. With more than 22,000 people travelling to Exmouth, Onslow and Carnarvon to witness the eclipse, We Are Gather – alongside Mellen Events – was appointed by Tourism Western Australia to design and deliver a cultural program that would meet the moment. We concepted and produced Dark Sky Festival, a place-led program that transformed the eclipse into an opportunity for destination storytelling, community engagement, and tourism legacy. Our role spanned end-to-end creative strategy, programming, production and delivery across two remote towns. We managed stakeholder engagement, marketing, communications, event logistics and legacy planning, working closely with state and local governments, community leaders and tourism bodies.
The experience
Built around the rhythm of the eclipse and the energy of the north-west, Dark Sky Festival unfolded over five days across Exmouth and Onslow – bringing together science, food, culture, wellness and connection in one place-led program. From stargazing dinners hosted by astronomer Greg Quicke and winemaker Vanya Cullen AO, to the now-iconic Totality Brunch timed to the eclipse itself, the experience was immersive, sensory and unforgettable. Guests explored native flavours with Fervor at sunset, participated in workshops and wellness sessions, and engaged in hands-on STEM programming developed with Scitech and Astrotourism WA. Across five outdoor sites, the festival came to life with live music, market stalls, food trucks and local makers – each moment grounded in story and community.
“This event has had a positive impact on the residents, creating a sense of civic pride and a sense of belonging to the community.”
